Windows 10 - ATI Radeon Xpress 1150

07:20 Posted by Jurgens Krause , , , , , , 12 comments
I just spent the last 3 hours trying to get a working driver for an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 installed on an old Dell Inspiron running Windows 10-64bit.

None of the links on discussion blogs seem to work anymore, and the WDM only driver from AMD did not actually contain any driver (as far as I could tell)

Enable Remote Desktop on Windows Home Editions

For a long time you had to have the Professional or Enterprise Editions of Windows in order to access the computer using Remote Desktop. Now, thanks to a couple of committed developers, we can enable RDP functionality on Windows Home Editions as well!.

Disabling Windows 10 Update Uploading

In a move that has a lot of users up in arms, Microsoft has changed the way that updates are delivered in Windows 10. The new Windows update system uses a torrent like function of using PCs that have already downloaded an update, to share it back onto the internet. This is fine for users with unmetered internet, but for a lot of users, these uploads churn through their data caps quite fast.

Top Free Windows Softphones Compared

Which softphone you use may depend largely on why you want to use a softphone in the first place. For example, if you are looking for an alternative to FOP (Flash Operator Panel) then I would suggest the excellent Dialplate application, but if you are just a normal desktop user looking for a cheap way to make use of your company's existing VOIP infrastructure, then have a look at these.

When comparing features I will only be looking at the features available in the free version, and not the premium one where applicable.

Ultimate Seedbox Tutorial (Step-By-Step)

14:05 Posted by Jurgens Krause , , , , , , 1 comment

Setting up your own seedbox from scratch, step by step tutorial.

While Ubuntu may not be the most lightweight Linux distro available, ti does make things very easy. I will be using Ubuntu 14.04 Server. I developed this tutorial using VirtualBox, but if you have a spare laptop or old pc, that will work just as well.

I will show you how to install Ubuntu 14.04 server, install the latest version of Deluge, including the daemon and web interface, as well as set up a basic FTP server and Samba share to access your downloads.

Introduction to Radio Mobile

11:23 Posted by Jurgens Krause , , No comments
Radio Mobile is a free (not open source) RF Propagation simulator. Originally intended for amateur radio operators, the software is also perfect for plotting long distance wireless links on the 2.4ghz and 5.8ghz bands (and any other for that matter).

You can find thorough documentation for the software on http://radiomobile.pe1mew.nl/ but I would like to make a few tutorials specifically geared towards 802.11 networks.

Raspbian on Windows with Installer (VirtualBerry)

08:13 Posted by Jurgens Krause , , 2 comments

Getting Raspbian running on a virtual machine can be very useful if you do development, or just want to play around. Easy to use solutions like VirtualBox unfortunately cannot emulate anything other than x64 or i386 CPUs, while the Raspberry runs on an ARM chip.

Enter Qemu, an open source virtualization host that can run on Windows, Mac or Linux and emulate a wide variety of CPUs, inlcuding the ARM chip that the Raspberry Pi is based on.

I have created an installer for Qemu that is preconfigured with the latest Raspbian image (Jan 2014) at the time of writing this, but still there are a couple of steps required to get it working 100%

Supercharge your mRemoteNG

09:19 Posted by Jurgens Krause , , , , , 2 comments

If you are anything like me you have at least 50 different computers that you need to manage remotely. If you use Putty for ssh, WinSCP for file copies, VNC for desktop access and Microsoft RDP for managing Windows machines, you will know how hard it can be to keep all your logins organized.

mRemoteNG is a fully featured, tabbed, remote access manager. It seamlessly integrates with RDP, Putty, VNC and even has an integrated web browser built in.

What makes mRemoteNG even more useful is it's ability to integrate external tools. Now, for you these may be differ from the ones I find useful, but I will list my favourites as examples.

Hotkeys

16:29 Posted by Jurgens Krause , No comments
This one is just for Windows users.

If you haven't heard of the application "Autohotkey" might I suggest you have a look. It enables you to create complex scripts to automate repetitive tasks.

Installation is quite simple, just download and run the installer.

Once you have it up and running simply right click on the icon in the taskbar, and select "Edit this script". The default script only has one shortcut:

^!n::
IfWinExist Untitled - Notepad
WinActivate
else
Run Notepad
return

Let's take a look at what it does:
First it defines the hotkey, in this case:
^ - ctrl
! - alt
n - n

When the hotkey (ctrl+alt+n) is pressed:
IfWinExist Untitled - Notepad - Checks if notepad is running
WinActivate - If true it brings it to the foreground and puts focus on it
else
 Run Notepad
- self explanitory (though if you use an application not reference in the system %path% varable you have to give the full path)
return
- end of hotkey

as a further example, this is the shortcut I use to ping the address currently in the system clipboard

^!p::
address=%clipboard%
run, ping %address% -t
return

If you have any other cool ideas on using hotkeys, let me know.
